Bringing schizophrenia into the Darwinian fold

چکیده

A search through the psychology literature reveals a number of current popular evolutionary theories on the origin of schizophrenia. These Darwinian theories assume the fact of evolution, and then from this starting point go on to make unsubstantiated and implausible speculations, often untestable or practically so. Where testable, the scenarios are easily refuted, as they do not correlate with research findings about schizophrenia.

Into the Fold: Searching for a Theory of Natural Inference

We attempt to bring a little realism back to quantum theory by bringing it into the fold of relational theories. This allows us to formulate an approach to quantum theory which is perhaps compatible with quantum gravity. We also use another relational theory—Darwinian evolution—as an analogy in order to postulate such realistic dynamics. This paper is written in relatively lay terms and presume...

Detection of schizophrenia patients using convolutional neural networks from brain effective connectivity maps of electroencephalogram signals

Background: Schizophrenia is a mental disorder that severely affects the perception and relations of individuals. Nowadays, this disease is diagnosed by psychiatrists based on psychiatric tests, which is highly dependent on their experience and knowledge. This study aimed to design a fully automated framework for the diagnosis of schizophrenia from electroencephalogram signals using advanced de...

Schizophrenia, psychiatric genetics, and Darwinian psychiatry: an evolutionary framework.

The evolutionary origins of one of the most dramatic and seemingly deleterious behavioral phenotypes, the syndrome known as schizophrenia, are mysterious. Schizophrenia occurs in all cultures and is inherited. Although most phenotypes are said to be "selected for" based on adaptive qualities, it is difficult to understand how the genetic basis of schizophrenia could have operated under a simila...

Additive effect of MTHFR and GRIN1 genetic polymorphisms on the risk of schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is a complex disorder with polygenic inheritance. The MTHFR gene (OMIM: 607093) plays an important role in the folate metabolism. It has been suggested that C677T (rs1801133) and A1298C (rs1801131) genetic polymorphisms in the MTHFR gene lead to the decreased activity of the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase enzyme which may have significant effect on developing schizophrenia. W...
